Get a hands on with Sony’s Xperia Z3 and you’ll want to keep
it – it is likely to be the next phone that makes iPhone 6 users green with
envy. The slim rounded aluminium frame and tempered glass screen has a simple
minimalist feel of high quality design that any iPhone lover
would appreciate. But it is rugged too – waterproof and dust proof. So you are guaranteed a long-lasting, great-looking phone. And the design is combined with great engineering beneath the surface. It is blisteringly fast on 4G and ideal for watching video on the go, thanks to a quad-core, Qualcomm Snapdragon 801 processor, which is like having four tiny porsche engines working together.

But all that power won’t use up the battery in a couple of
hours. Sony’s Battery STAMINA Mode turns off background functions when you’re
not using them to help extend your battery life to two days. So that’s the
basics covered, good looking, robust and high performance. But the real beauty
of the Android Xperia Z3 lies in the toys. This phone brings back the joy of
messing about with your phone to discover all of its hidden tricks. Sony boasts
the world’s best camera and camcorder in a smartphone. And I wasn’t disappointed.
There’s a stonking 20.7megapixel camera, offering amazing low-light sensitivity
of ISO 12800.
The quality and detail of pictures is stunning although I
didn’t get the chance to test it underwater. And the video was very smooth,
thanks to the SteadyShot, with 4K resolution, which is four times Full HD. And
new social camera apps and editing features mean you can film an event and your
reaction to it at the same time with Face in. Even the audio is hi-res on this
beauty, with noise-cancelling support. And Sony boasts its brightest display
for mobile, with “intuitive contrast enhancement” for easy viewing, even in
sunshine. It comes in two sizes 5.2-inch or the compact 4.6-inch and in a
choice of white, black, copper or silver green.
For gamers, there’s PS4 Remote Play2, which I haven’t been
able to test yet. The Xperia Z3 is great for listening to music – and it will
even upscale the fidelity of your MP3 or AAC music collection. And Sony boasts
that ambient noise is virtually eliminated when paired with a special headset. Looking
after the practicalities, the Z3 enables you to transfer all of your existing
music, photos, contacts and more from your old Android, iOS or Windows
smartphone to the Xperia. Also, Xperia
Email, Calendar and Contacts apps, can be synced using Microsoft Exchange
ActiveSync. It’s expected to be from £28 a month on contract when it arrives in
the shops before the end of September. So if you are thinking of buying an
iPhone6, at least wait until you can get your hands on an Xperia Z3, it could
change your mind.
